People don't like to be controlled by other people. Granted... But at the same time they have nothing against controlling other people.
Manipulation. Suggesting a thought or an idea - that's great. Nudging someone toward a particular train of thoughts - it's a sport, an art. Persuading someone - it's manipulation. Writing a letter that explains your thoughts and beliefs and hoping that it will change someone's mind - it's manipulation.
Why? Why is it so important?
Ranking. Domination.
It's not about making someone follow your ideas. It's not even about making someone being your subordinate - it's all about NOT BEING A SUBORDINATE YOURSELF.
It's about control and power. It's about knowing that there is nobody above you, that you are absolute. Because otherwise you are nothing more than a simple subordinate.
We are all governed by simple primitive animal instincts. Monkeys establishing a ranking ladder in a group, politicians establishing their weights, bullies in a dark street establishing who has control, corporations establishing whose gain is most important, neighbours establishing who controls the area and who simply lives in there... All governed by one primitive instinct - I AM THE MOST IMPORTANT CREATURE AND YOU ARE ALL BELOW ME, with a caveat "unless someone beats me".
Fear and eagerness. Perfectly balanced.
What's most unusual is that it does work!
